The Penang Diocesan Pastoral Institute (PDPI) serves as the formation organ of the Diocese of Penang.
Efforts to start an institute to provide formation for the people of God in the Diocese was first initiated in 1988 by Bishop Emeritus A. Selvanayagam and a team consisting of priests, religious and lay persons. By 1991, after much discussion and preparation work, PDPI was prepared to respond concretely to the needs in the Diocese with regards to formation programmes.
Since then, PDPI has organised and implemented numerous formation programmes and retreats, especially for members of the laity. Under the direction of the present Bishop of Penang, Rt. Rev. Sebastian Francis, PDPI is renewing its efforts to achieve its objectives and aims.
OBJECTIVE AND AIMS
The objective of PDPI is to assist the people of God grow as Christian disciples as they build the Kingdom of God in their lives, families, communities, society and nation. This calls for them to be involved in Christian witnessing and missionary outreach.
PDPI aims to achieve its objective by:
* providing opportunities for the People of God to receive theological, pastoral, spiritual and human formation.
* collaborating with parish priests and heads of diocesan apostolates, ministries and services on formation programmes for those under their care.
* forming and developing present and future lay leaders and formators in the Diocese;
* making accessible theological, pastoral and spiritual formation through on-line learning, etc.
